Bahamas Local Tips

Local Currency
Although the official currency is the Bahamian dollar, it is interchangeable with the American dollar. If available, it is often possible to request that your change be given in U.S. currency.
Bargain Space
Local vendors are often option to negotiation and will frequently quote a higher price expecting you to try to barter them down. Start low and bargain up!
Cell Service
Check with your service operator before you pack your cell. Some providers do not work in The Bahamas.
Wheeled Explorer
Although cars drive on the left, renting a car is advisable for exploring – a single road typically runs the length of each island. Only on Grand Bahama can you travel everywhere by taxi (marked cabs, though expensive, are reliable).
Official Ride
Avoid unmarked cars claiming to be taxis – you’ll know official cabs from their displayed tag, yellow plates and driver identification. Ask about the fare before you agree to the ride, but don’t expect to negotiate – many fares are pre-set.
Bahamian Cuisine
Conch is a local shellfish delicacy. It can be served raw in salad, fried in a fritter, breaded and deep fried, or in chowder. It is sweet and mild – try it at least once!
Local Brews
Brewed, bottled, and available everywhere in the Bahamas, local beer Kalik is a mouth-watering lager with a worldwide following.
Junkanoo
Celebrated the day after Christmas and on New Years day, this street parade starts around 2am and goes until daylight. Called “Mardi Gras without the mugging” it can still be unsafe – opt for paid street-side seating to avoid being hassled.
Regatta Time
Try to catch an island regatta if you can. These gatherings of Bahamian people, music, food, culture and, of course, sailboat racing, are always worth experiencing. Different islands celebrate them at different times.
The Fish Fry
This collection of eateries at Arawak Cay is the place for Bahamian food. Watch chefs prepare conch salad, try Sky Juice (coconut water, sweet milk and gin), or a enjoy traditional fish dinner while watching the sunset.
